Will My Teen Bedroom Idea Work?

By Sherrie Le Masurier

I have a great teen bedroom room idea which includes setting up a grooming area, a workspace and adding some decorative shelving. The problem is I don’t know if everything will fit? Do you have any suggestions that will help me make the most of the teen bedroom space?

To see if your teen bedroom idea will work you need to evaluate the space you have in terms of size and shape. The best way to do this is to empty your room completely.

By emptying your room of its contents you can also evaluate the condition of the walls, floor, windows, doors and trim.

Regardless whether you’re doing a major home repair, redecorating from top to bottom or just applying a fresh coat of paint and some new curtains, the job is made a lot easier when your teen bedroom isn’t filled with stuff.

Putting your teen bedroom idea plan to paper is the best place to start. Sample furniture arrangements are much easier on paper than physically moving things around to see what works and what doesn’t.

Creating a place for personal grooming in your teen bedroom will continue to benefit you for years to come. While some family’s have large enough bathrooms where everyone has their own space for grooming and storing toiletries other families do not, so creating a grooming area within your teen bedroom is a great idea provided you have the space.

A small but well-lit vanity table and mirror in a corner of your room is a great teen bedroom idea that can help maximize your available space. A vanity table doesn’t have to be large to be useful. It can also be as simple as a wide shelf positioned low enough to be used when seated.

If you do have the space to incorporate a place for grooming in your teen bedroom you’ll need to make sure there are adequate receptacles for small appliances like hair dryers and straighteners. In addition to a small mirror on your vanity table consider incorporating a full length mirror so you can check your overall appearance. Full length mirrors can be either free standing or mounted on the back of your bedroom door.

You mentioned your teen bedroom idea included establishing a workspace. Whether you’re incorporating a computer station or homework desk, it’s important you take into account the space required for any related equipment like a printer or an extra storage unit for homework supplies.

Once you’ve decided on what areas of your teen bedroom will be used for what you’ll want to consider any new furnishing items you wish to incorporate.

Even one new or refurbished piece of furniture can change the entire look of your teen bedroom.

Be sure to take lots of room measurements and take your notes and your tape measure with you when shopping for new teen bedroom furniture.

When looking for teen bedroom furniture it’s always wise to consider items that offer lots of storage such as desks with multiple drawers and armoires and shelving units that can hold both books and baskets.

I hope you’ve been able to incorporate all you wanted in your teen bedroom idea plan. If not, and you find yourself short on space sit down with your parents and discuss other options like creating a grooming area in the family bathroom or a workspace in the kitchen.
