Creative Paint Designs for Teen Bedrooms
By Sherrie Le Masurier
My teen is looking for some creative paint designs and techniques to use to update her teen room. Do you have any ideas for
paint designs for teen bedrooms?
When it comes to creative paint designs for teen bedrooms your options are vast. There are so many cool paint design techniques
out there to choose from however, I’ll just touch on some of the most popular ones for teens.
Create an accent wall
One of my favorite paint design ideas is to create an accent wall that sets off the rest of the room. Start by selecting a favorite color that is
strong yet inviting (you want the color to welcome not repel). Once you have the color for your accent wall selected you’ll want to find a
lighter shade of the same color or a complementary color to paint the remaining three walls. Balance the room with a selection of decor
accessories that match the color and intensity of your accent wall.
Divide and conquer with two colors
Using a paint design technique called waistlining, divide your walls into two parts horizontally. Paint the lower portion one color or varying
shade and the top half another.
You don’t have to be exact with your division either - asymmetrical proportions look really cool!
Color washing
Another good paint design for teen bedrooms technique is to use diluted paint or a translucent paint (sometimes referred to a color wash
glaze). Here you apply layer upon layer in order to create a subtle graduation of color. The neat thing about this technique is that light
travels through this kind of finish instead of bouncing off of it.
When it comes to color washing, different approaches will give you different results. For instance, you’ll find a natural color wash glaze
will blend together beautifully and be very rich in nature. Synthetic oil based glazes on the other hand, take longer to dry but give you more
time to be creative.
It’s best to start with one or two solid base coats of white or a color and then brush on thin layers of your color wash glaze. The best way
to color wash is slowly – adding, diffusing and where appropriate, changing the color. The key is to blend glazes while they’re still wet making
color washing a great team project. Remember two hands are faster than one and after all, it is your daughter’s room so why not get her involved
in not only selecting the color(s) but applying them as well? To ensure an even finish it’s best if one person applies the glaze and the other
one blends it throughout the room.
